In the past few months this firm has largely reduced the overtime work of workers in such a way that the workers were only able to earn the legal minimum wage (1808 RMB), which is barely enough for their survival. The workers said the employer will soon stop the operation of the Chinese factory and move the business to the Philippines. This firm has also failed to comply with the labour laws in many respects. For instance, it has not paid the social insurance and housing fund for workers for a long period of time.
Due to all these, the workers have recently staged a strike. At first the employer disappeared and was nowhere to be found. Later, upon the intervention of the local labour bureau, the employer appointed some representatives (from an external negotiation company) to negotiate with the workers. What was promised by these representatives in the negotiation meeting was later denied by the employer. The workers were very furious; some of them went to block the highway. Around 21 of them were arrested but were released after a few days of detention. Up to this point, the employer only promised to grant workers a small amount of compensation but has no intention to back pay the social insurance and housing fund for workers.
Worker Empowerment, an NGO that has been supporting this strike, would like to ask Japanese people to support the workers.
